What is Animation Bootcamp?

Knowing HOW to do something in After Effects is great… but knowing WHAT to do is better. Understanding the principles of good Animation is the key to creating amazing, fluid work. This 6-week interactive experience will put you ahead of the competition and ignite your ability to create beautiful, purposeful movement no matter what you’re working on.

If you start every project with a pit in your stomach hoping that somehow you’ll “find” some good animation by experimenting with keyframes… then this course will literally change your career.

What will you learn?

The course is designed to make you an animator in 6-weeks. It’s structured to build lesson-by-lesson until you’re pulling off very complex and sophisticated animation.

This is not a course that shows you a bunch of “tricks” that you may or may not use ever again. You will learn the secrets of Animation, knowledge that you will be able to use on every single project you do for the rest of your career.

Whether you’re just starting out or a veteran, your skills will improve IMMENSELY if you complete the course.

01

Week 1

Get rid of bad habits, make friend with Timing & Spacing, and get your hands dirty with some old-fashioned cel animation.

02

Week 2

Translate the knowledge from Week 1 into After Effects. By the end of this week you will finally have complete control of BOTH graph editors

03

Week 3

Explore two of the most common types of movement: Oscillations (things that move back and forth) and Bounces. Anticipation and Overshoots are easy once you’ve nailed these.

04

Week 4

Follow-through and Squash-and-stretch are two ways of adding a TON of energy to your animations. We cover a bunch of ways to use both of these techniques

05

Week 5

What do you do when you have to coordinate many things moving at once? This week gets more advanced as we cover Reinforcing Movement and Eye Trace.

06

Week 6

What happens if you don’t want smooth, beautiful movement? Hey, sometimes you don’t. We cover “odd” animation and you also receive your Final Project.

What happens after Bootcamp ends?

At the end of Bootcamp you are inducted into the Alumni Facebook Group where you can post your final projects, meet students from previous sessions, and continue to keep in touch with your new compadres. The networking that takes place in this group is priceless, and many students have gotten freelance work from the connections they’ve made in this course.

Frequently Asked Questions

My company will pay for this course, do you provide a receipt?

When you purchase your spot for the course, you receive a receipt from us that can be used to get reimbursed by your employer. If you need further documentation, please contact us.

What hardware do I need?

As long as you have a relatively modern computer and can run After Effects and connect to the internet, you should be good to go.

What software do I need?

You need Adobe CC2014 or later. All project files and elements were created in that version of After Effects, and you won’t be able to open them if you are on an earlier version. We also use Flash for one lesson, but you can use any version of Flash CS5 and up. It’s very helpful to have Photoshop and Illustrator as well, though not required.

The webinars require GoToWebinar software which is a free download. You also need a Facebook account to access the Facebook Group.

How well should I know After Effects before starting the course?

If you’ve never opened After Effects before, you should get comfortable with it before taking this course. If you have at least 2-3 months with the program and can add layers, set keyframes, and render out movie files, that’s all you need. This is not a technical After Effects course. We focus on MOVEMENT. There are also bonus videos for beginners that show you how to do things like Parent layers and use Track Mattes, just in case you need a little help.

How much time does the course require?

That depends. Some students spend 10 hours a week, some spend 40. To get the most out of the course you should plan on spending between 10-15 hours a week going through the lessons and completing the exercises. This is not a 4-5 hour a week class, it’s pretty intense. The more you put in, the more you’ll get out. It’s just 6-weeks… suck it up… it’s worth it.

I’m already a good animator, is this course for me?

Maybe not. If you already have full control over your animations and can execute any type of movement you come up with, then you don’t need Animation Bootcamp. If you think you’re pretty good, but still can’t seem to get things to move the way you want, you’ll DEFINITELY get a lot from the course. We’ve had students with a 10+ years in the field rave about the results they got.

How does critiquing work?

All critiques are handled online in the Facebook Group and on the Webinars.

When you complete an exercise you will post the render on the private Facebook Group and post the project file in the shared Google Drive. The Facebook Group is moderated by the instructors and TA’s who give feedback on your work. You’re also encouraged from the start to critique each other’s work.

On the weekly webinars, a few projects will be opened up to pick apart and finesse. This is an awesome opportunity to see how a few tweaks can totally change the feel of an animation.

Can I download the content of the course?

The course content consists of videos, audio files, PDFs, and project files. Everything is available for download except the video lessons. You have lifetime access to the Student Portal so you can always go back and watch the lessons, but they are streaming only.

Do you offer payment plans?

We don’t, and at this time we have no plans to do so.

What is your refund policy?

We offer a 30-day money back guarantee – no questions asked. If this isn’t the Animation course of your dreams, send us an e-mail within 30 days for a refund.
